LEXINGTON, KY—The Lakewood BlueClaws had runners on the corners and nobody out in the 8th inning, but failed to tie the game, and fell 3-2 to Lexington (17-17) on Wednesday night.
It’s Lakewood’s 5th straight loss, a season-high, and they are 0-5 on their eight-game road trip.
The BlueClaws (17-15), coming off a series in which they scored just nine runs on 37 hits, had a great chance of reliever Chad Wagler in the 8th, when Welinson Baez led off with a double and Doug Morales reached on a bunt single.
With runners on the corners, Wagler struck out CJ Henry and induced Quintin Berry into a 4-6-3 double-play to get out of trouble. It was just the 3rd DP hit into by the speedy Berry this year.
Bud Norris (1-4) picked up his first win in his 16th start, allowing just two runs over seven on eight strikeouts.
Tim Torres hit a 2-run home run (2) in the fourth inning and Koby Clemens (9) hit a solo shot two batters later to give Lexington a 3-1 lead on Carlos Monasterios and the BlueClaws.
Those would be the only runs that Monasterios (9-7) allowed over seven innings of work.
Lakewood got an early RBI from Quintin Berry on a SAC fly to take the lead, but found themselves down by two in the 6th, when Berry drove in Henry, was 2-3, with a simple groundout to second base.
Game two of the four-game series is at 7:05 on Thursday night. Lakewood sends LHP Sergio Escalona (0-4, 5.33) to the mound against LHP Doug Arguello (6-7, 4.94). |
