HAGERSTOWN, MD—Hagerstown blew open a 3-3 game and held on to beat Lakewood 7-6 in the first of three on Monday night.
Hagerstown (27-36) had lost 9 of their previous 12 games, and the teams combined for 8 errors (4 each) in the game. Only 1 of Lakewood’s 6 runs was earned.
The BlueClaws made it quite interesting with 3 runs in the 8th inning off of reliever Joe Welsh. Kevin Howard, who drove in 7 on Sunday, had an RBI single, and later in the frame, Tuffy Gosewisch drove in a run on a groundout. On that play, third baseman Leonard Davis threw behind Gus Milner at 2nd and the ball went into the outfield, and Milner scored to cut the lead to one.
In the 9th, Julian Williams picked up a 1-out single off of closer Josh Wilkie, who then struck out Fidel Hernandez and Adrian Cardenas grounded to short to end the game.
